Our Doberman, Kassidy, has been diagnosed with DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) and is on twice daily meds for her heart. While giving her evening dosages to her, she bumped my hand with the large (5MG) Vetmedin (Pimobenden) heart tabs in it......one fell on the floor and Macci dove for it. TFT's are LIGHTENING FAST....trust me. He had it down his throat in a flash and 15ML of Peroxide wouldn't convince him to vomit it back up.
I had no clue what kind of reaction he would have to a dosage of cardiac meds prescribed for a 70# large dog. He weighs JUST 5 pounds. I grabbed the phone and got Timberland Vet Clinic on the line, and a vet tech responded nearly instantly. Get him in! Off we went. Time was passing too fast and the meds were trying to get into his little system.
He was acting pretty much normally when we first got there, but they couldn't get him to vomit either. It wasn't long before he WAS showing signs of both Peroxide tummy cramping and heart actions jumping and pounding in his little chest. He was emitting sounds I can only describe as blood-curdling. I don't ever want to hear those sounds again.....ever. My heart was breaking with the thought of losing this little guy to a stupid accident. Well, of losing him PERIOD....for any reason. Macci can be a pain in the neck, has his own drummer he marches to sometimes, but he is a loving and dear little dog.....and he is only barely 2 years old. Just starting on the journey of his life. He had to be saved. No matter what it took.
There is a vet tech there at Timberland to whom I will be eternally grateful. All the gals are super, and the vets are great.....but ANNETTE went above and beyond with Macci. God lover her. She worked with him with IV's, meds, comforting him, and then getting a stomach tube in to administer liquid Charcoal. (Yuck). She reassured me.....old fussbudget that I am....and kept me from losing it by her constantly reassuring me and staying calm and efficient. A dear friend and her daughter came down from Mossyrock to give moral support and bless their hearts.....I'll always be so very grateful to Sharon Fisher and her daughter Teresa for being there. Sharon has a way with critters and calmly took over my position by Macci and held him gently and firmly so Annette could do what had to be done.
Then, since I was a mess.....let's face it, that's the only word that fits, guys...... Sharon took Macci home with her to monitor heart and vitals all night. His heart rate finally settled down and he slept, pottied and drank some water for her. Before he left the clinic with her, his heart was bouncing all over the place.....from 120 up to 180 and all points in between. She said it dropped down to normal shortly after they got home and this morning it was right where it should be.
Annette wanted him back this morning to take out the IV and check him over, so I met Sharon and Macci there at the clinic early .....to see a happy and upbeat little guy greeting me with tail going 40MPH, ears up and bright, shining eyes. Yup.....hard to not start crying like a baby. Thank God for Sharon, as well as Annette.
Honestly? I don't know WHAT I expected this morning.....and is think Annette didn't think he would make it, either. But he DID. TENACITY is a watchword for Toy Fox Terriers. Anyone who has one will attest to that. Thank God for Tenacity.
He is home now, telling his hair-raising tale to the other dogs and basking in the glory of it all. Silly dogs.
However, there is also a vet tech that will live on with us right here everytime I look at this little dog. She will be remembered for a VERY long time for what she did for all of us.

Thank you ANNETTE......we love ya! And, look at the photo.....so does Macci.
